Introducing Dr. Will Rutherford

The Next Headmaster of Capstone Classical Academy

Dr Rutherford

Capstone Classical Academy is pleased to welcome Dr. William Rutherford as its next Headmaster, effective June 1, 2026.

“I am honored to be chosen for this position,” says Dr. Rutherford. “In its short history, Mr. Fisher, teachers, staff, board, and school founders have laid a tremendous foundation, and Capstone is becoming a leader in classical Christian education. I look forward to building on this work and leading the school into its next season of growth, including its first graduating class.”

Dr. Rutherford brings a lifetime of learning to his new role. He has a deep belief that classical Christian education forms the entire child – mind, will, affections, and body – directing each toward wisdom and love of God. He sees this work not only as the nurturing of individual souls, but also as a meaningful contribution to the renewal of our common life in our American republic. He takes particular joy in walking alongside teachers as they seek to embody and impart to their students a love for the Good, the True, and the Beautiful, and in supporting administrative staff to realize the mission with excellence.

“While visiting the school and spending time with members of the Capstone community, I have sensed a genuine joy in the classrooms and hallways, and evidence of God’s gracious work among its people.”

Education & Experience

Dr. Rutherford entered K-12 classical education because he was looking to make a difference in the formation of young men and women before they reach college. He joined the Great Hearts network of public classical charter schools as Assistant Headmaster and then Headmaster of Great Hearts Monte Vista in San Antonio, where he shepherded the school through its early graduating classes. He later served as Executive Director of the San Antonio region, providing leadership and oversight for eight headmasters and their schools and leading the district academic services team to cultivate a strong academic culture. With a growing conviction that the fullness of classical education is best realized alongside Christian formation, Dr. Rutherford was led to serve as Head of School at Jackson Hole Classical Academy in Wyoming, a private K-12 classical Christian school.

Along with his wife, Heather, and their daughter, Charlotte, Dr. Rutherford has long sought to be rooted in the life of the Church. While in San Antonio, they were active in Christ Episcopal Church, where he taught, served, and participated on the endowment committee. They now worship at First Baptist Church in Jackson, Wyoming. As a family, they delight in God’s creation – hiking, biking, and traveling to America’s national parks – as well as in the simple joys of time together, whether watching college football or volunteering at their daughter’s swim meets. Dr. Rutherford is always up for a good cup of coffee and discussion of a great book.

Dr. Rutherford holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, a master’s degree in theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in New Testament and Christian origins from The University of Edinburgh. He began his academic work as an adjunct professor at St. Edward’s University and later served as an assistant professor at Houston Baptist University, where he taught biblical languages, biblical theology, ancient Judaism and Christianity, and religious studies. Alongside his teaching, he contributed to the translation of the Holman Christian Standard Bible and published scholarly work on ancient Judaism and Christianity, including contributions to The Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Greece and Rome and Harvard Theological Review.

The Search Process

The Capstone Board of Directors, Search Committee, and Mr. Paul Fisher worked collaboratively throughout the nationwide Headmaster search process which began in December 2025. Dr. Rutherford was a leading candidate from among 13 people who applied for the position. The field of applicants was reviewed and narrowed down to four. These candidates completed interviews with the Capstone Board and Headmaster Search Committee and the Hillsdale College K-12 Offices. Upon completing further interviews, Dr. Rutherford was chosen to become Capstone’s new Headmaster. We are very grateful for God’s provision throughout this prayerful search process. Please join us in warmly welcoming Dr. Rutherford and his family to Capstone and to Fargo.
