Illuminating the Middle Ages

The beauty of the past comes to life with illuminated manuscripts.

As fourth-grade learners make their way through their Medieval Europe studies, they have taken time to slow down and wonder at the beautiful illuminated manuscripts of the period. During the Middle Ages, monks, nuns, and specialized artists created these works by hand, adding intricate designs, gold leaf, and colorful illustrations to books. At a time when many people could not read, illuminated manuscripts offered a vivid way to share stories, teachings, and beauty with everyone.

Learners created their own illuminated initials, taking the first letter of their name and drawing and painting designs around it. They chose colors and images that would tell a reader something about themselves.

They also listened to a few delightful read-alouds that connected further to the history of the Middle Ages. Marguerite Makes a Book is a tender story about a young girl helping her grandfather, a famous manuscript illuminator, complete a book. The Ink Garden of Brother Theophane is a delightful tale of a monk who loves the outdoors and discovers he can make vibrant ink for his manuscripts from plants and berries.

Giving students the space to appreciate the simple beauty of a time long ago helps them connect more deeply to the curriculum they are studying.

We invite you to see our classrooms in person and discover an education rooted in Christ, grounded in timeless wisdom, and designed to cultivate a lifetime of learning, virtue, and purpose.
